Today is Vaffeldagen, Waffle Day in Sweden and Norway. It used to be a holiday, and was called Vårfrudagen (=Our lady day), in honour of the Virgin Mary – as it’s celebrated nine months before the birth of Christ.

Yes it’s time to harvest that Danish Christmas Schnaps. If you, like me, started in the beginning of November – then the Schnaps is ready! Simply sift it through a coffee filter, and enjoy the amber colour and the round taste with a clear hint of orange.

Every year there is old and new bits of Xmas sneaking its way into my home. The smell of oranges and cloves. My Xmas smell and a tradition that tracks back from my childhood watching the advent calendar on the telly where they had 24 cloves in an orange, taking out one every day, counting [...]

Today it’s Saint Lucy’s day – a day traditionally celebrated in Scandinavia with saffron buns and candle light. Saint Lucy was an italian saint (I wrote about her last year) but actually we’re celebrating mid winter solcice – the light coming back into the darkness we have up here in the North. Actually this day, [...]

(PS it’s also Pancake [...]

I love Christmas, the smells, the decorations, the food and the drink. Today I’ve started transforming a basic aquavit to delicious Christmas snaps – and I’m so happy to start doing Christmas things. But relax I wouldn’t be totally Christmassy for the next 40 days….but there will be some tales of my Danish/ Norwegian Christmas preparations.
